HardnessMaster: FAQs

What is hard water?
We call water "hard water" if it contains a lot of calcium or magnesium dissolved in it. Total water hardness is measured in either parts per million (ppm), weight/volume (mg/L), or Grains Per Gallon (gpg) of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the water. Hard water causes various problems:

  • It can cause "scale" to form on the inside of pipes, faucets, water heaters, tea kettles and so on. The calcium and magnesium precipitate out of the water and stick to things. The scale doesn't conduct heat well and it also reduces the flow through pipes. Eventually, pipes, plumbing fixtures and other water appliances can become completely clogged or even damaged.
  • It reacts with soap to form a sticky scum, and also reduces the soap's ability to lather. Since most of us like to wash with soap, hard water makes a bath or shower less productive.
  • Causes unsightly scale (i.e., limescale, "white deposit") on faucets, showerheads, sink holes, toilets, shower walls, bath tubs, etc.
  • Shortens the life of water heaters
  • Shortens the life of water filters and Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes
  • Clogs and/or shortens the life of valuable plumbing fixtures such as faucets, shower heads, toilets, etc.
  • Known to cause itchy skin
  • Known to cause hair to be dry, frizzy, less manageable and difficult to untangle

What is scale?
Scale occurs when calcium and magnesium precipitate out of the water and stick to things or form on the inside of pipes, faucets, water heaters, bath tubs, sinks, basins, shower walls, tea kettles and so on. The scale doesn't conduct heat well and it also reduces the flow through pipes. Eventually, pipes, plumbing fixtures and other water appliances can become completely clogged or even damaged. If you see " white deposit" on on faucets, showerheads, sink holes, toilets, shower walls, bath tubs, etc., the "white deposit" is considered limescale or scale.

How do I know if my water is hard?
The simplest way to determine the hardness of water is the lather/froth test: soap or toothpaste, when agitated, lathers easily in soft water but not in hard water. Another way to tell if your water is hard is the deposit test. If you see white deposits (i.e., limescale or scale) on water pipes or plumbing fixtures that have been in use for a while, you have hard water. What is the HardnessMaster™ system?

The Hardness Master is an intelligent alternative for hard water treatment in your apartment, home, or business.

The principle of magnetic water treatment is not new. The first patent was granted around 1900. HardnessMaster™ takes this knowledge into the 21st century by using the patented D.D.M.F. (Dynamic Distortion of Molecular Forces) technique. The electronic device treats the water by inducing magnetic and electric fields with a continuous changing frequency. This forces the dissolved minerals such as Calcium and Magnesium to crystallize in the water before the ions settle (hard scale) at walls of piping, bathroom or heating elements of dishwasher and washing machine. This action stops any further build up of hard scale by preventing the settlement of dissolved mineral ions on whatever surface.

The capability of the water to dissolve minerals will also be increased and this is the reason why hard scale layers will be softened, will slowly enter into the water stream, and will disappear down the drain.

The HardnessMaster™ makes it easy to solve your hard water problems without the use of salt or old conventional water softener technology. The HardnessMaster™ does not remove the beneficial minerals (i.e., calcium and magnesium) from you water supply, it simply changes the property of the hardness minerals in your water supply so that they stay in solution and not form scale in pipes, water heater, on fixtures, sinks and bath walls, etc. The HardnessMaster™ will also dissolve away any preexisting scale that may exist in your pipes and water appliances. (NOTE: If you live in an older house or have significant preexisting limescale/scale in your plumbing or water appliances, it is very important to allow approximately 30 to 90 days, sometimes longer, to dissolve away all of the preexisting limescale/scale. This means that you may experience slightly more limescale/scale levels after the installation until all of the old hard scale layers have disappeared down the drain. If you have clean piping and live in a new house you will only see the beneficial effects.)

What should I expect from the HardnessMaster™ system?
The Hardness Master is an intelligent alternative for hard water treatment in your apartment, home, or business. The HardnessMaster™ makes it easy to solve your hard water problems without the use of salt or old conventional water softener technology. The Hardness Master™ utilizes its advanced MaxConditioning™ technology to effectively soften (or condition) source water containing up to 50 grains per gallon (or 50 gpg or 855 mg/L or 855 ppm) of water hardness. The HardnessMaster™ doesn't remove the beneficial minerals (i.e., calcium and magnesium) from you water supply, it simply changes the property of the hardness minerals in your water supply so that they stay in solution and not form scale in pipes, water heater, on fixtures, sinks and bath walls, etc. It will even dissolve away any preexisting scale that may exist in your pipes and water appliances. Since our 6-month 100% Satisfaction Guarantee also includes a performance guarantee, we respectfully require our customers to properly install and use the HardnessMaster™ for at least ninety (90) days before returns may be authorized. This is to ensure customer satisfaction regarding the HardnessMaster™ water conditioning system performance, which often requires considerable descaling (i.e., gradual reduction of existing limescale buildup) from the piping system and water appliances (i.e., water heater, dishwasher, etc.). It is also important to understand that the HardnessMaster™ does not remove beneficial minerals such as calcium and magnesium from your source water, and, it does not address iron related water conditions.

How is scale eliminated when neither the HardnessMaster™ system nor the coils are in contact with the water?
The HardnessMaster™ system's advanced MaxConditioning™ technology works by producing an electronically applied field generated by a coil around the pipe. The fluids (usually water based) come under the influence of this field such that the mineral ions are forced to precipitate. (Controlled precipitation). These precipitates (crystals) flow down the drain with the water flow.

Does it really work?
Yes. It is so amazingly simple and impressive that many of our current customers couldn't believe it actually works until they experienced it for themselves. In fact, our most skeptical customers have typically said one of the following statements after using the HardnessMaster™: "It actually works!" or "This thing works!". We also include a 6-month 100% Satisfaction Guarantee with the HardnessMaster™ system so if you are not completely satisfied with its performance, you will get a complete refund. Customer Testimonials

How can I tell if it's working?
In around four to six weeks, if not right away depending on the level of pre-existing scale build-up in your plumbing system, you should notice:

  • The softening of scale around the basins
  • Scale flaking away from the kettle element and shower rose - Water often feels silkier
  • Water feeling hotter, improved performance of washing machines and dishwashers
  • The ability to reduce the amount of soap, shampoo, detergents and cleaners
  • Easier cleaning of surfaces, especially baths, basins and sinks.

Does the HardnessMaster™ system produce a strong magnetic field?
No. The magnetic field strength is extremely low. Lower than the magnetic field of our earth.

Does it affect the drinking water?
Water remains chemically unchanged, retaining the beneficial minerals and tastes the same so you do not need a separate drinking tap.

Where does the scale that is removed go?
As the scale does not stick to pipe work and appliances it all goes down the drain. This will not block up your drain as the crystals are microscopic in size.

What do I check once I have the HardnessMaster™ installed?
Simply ensure that the "Power" light-indicator on the power supply plug and the HardnessMaster are both illuminated RED and that the "Signal" light-indicator on the HardnessMaster is illuminated GREEN.

How much does it cost to run?
The unit costs about $10 in electricity annually

What plumbing/pipe material is suitable?
The unit can be fitted on Copper, Plastic, PVC, CPVC, PEX, Rubber, Lead, and Steel/Galvanized Steel pipes.

Where should the unit be installed?

How much pipe is needed for installation?
To install the unit you require at least 12" of straight pipe. This can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal pipe.

What if it does not work?
We can normally solve most problems. If we can't you will get your money back.

Can I install the unit?
As no plumbing is involved most customers fit the unit themselves and it should take no more than 30 minutes, or you can use a local handy man or electrician.

How easy is it to install?
Do-it-yourself installation is quite simple and quick. The installation does not require a plumber or the cutting of plumbing pipes.

  1. Locate the pipe where your water supply first enters your building.
  2. Wrap the signal cable 18 times around the pipe for lasting protection of the whole property.
  3. Connect the signal cable to the HardnessMaster™ unit and plug the HardnessMaster™ power cord directly, or using an extension cord, into a 110-Volt outlet. Plus, if you should move, is is easy to disconnect the HardnessMaster™ system and take it with you.
